Preschool Program

Preschool Application/Selection Process

  • Project Goal: To target and select children with demonstrated educational need as priority with inclusion of peer role models. Children will be targeted and selected based on the following: Parents as Teachers screening and referral; licensed daycare provider consultation; observation and referral; parent referrals; and DIAL 3 screenings. All potential applicants must be 4 years old by August 1 of the upcoming school year.

  • Application Process:

    • Parents must submit the initial application by April 1 of each year. The initial application contains information and questions about the child’s general background.

    • A second application is sent to parents requiring more in-depth information regarding: communication, cognitive, social/emotional, self help, and fine/gross motor skills. Parents review each point of development and evaluate with the following options: “Rarely, Sometimes, or Always” – depending on their child’s level.

    • Applicants are reviewed by Parents as Teachers, special services, preschool teacher/director, and building principal. Local daycares are also asked for input or information that may be helpful in the selection process.

    • Preschool teacher/director and building principal review all applications and identify children that have high needs or are potentially at –risk in some area of the school setting.

    • Once those students have been selected, peer models are placed into the program. This is a random selection process in which all peer models are placed together and names are drawn.

    • Remaining names are either placed on an alternate list or an extended waiting list. Alternates are children that may have minimum risks, but should still be considered as well as peer model candidates. Two boys and two girls are selected as alternates. The extended list is for children that would otherwise serve as a peer model if a position became vacant.

    • The length of the waiting list is dependent on the number of applicants. Since priority is given to students with at-risk factors, the number of peer models accepted into the program also varies.

    • All applicants are notified about their status in the process around May 1.
