September 2008 Last week was our first week of school. Our students appeared anxious to be here and our teachers were happy to greet them! Basketball practice has begun for grades 6-8. Boys and girls are gearing up for a great season. For game details or practice schedules, please check the Lutie Web page under the sports section. Coach Terry does a great job at keeping us informed. If you do not have access to the internet, please feel free to call the office for a schedule print-out. Our elementary teachers also have web pages to help keep parents informed of school events. Please be sure to check these out. Please note there is NO SCHOOL on Monday, September 1st in observance of Labor Day. September 19th we will dismiss at 12:26 for Hootin’ and Hollarin’ . With preliminary data in concerning our MAP scores, I am happy to say we met our Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). As you know, this target goes up every year as required by the No Child Left Behind Act. To maximize learning potentials in our students, grades 3 - 6 will take the Stanford 10 test on September 3rd. This test is a tool used to indicate areas of strengths and weaknesses with our students. Using the data, teachers can distinguish which parts of the curriculum to use as review and which pieces need to be dealt with in-depth. Grandparents Day is officially Sunday, September 7th. At Lutie Elementary, we would like to recognize Grandparents during lunch on MONDAY, September 8th, at 11:00. Grandparents are invited to have lunch with their elementary grandchild(ren). Karla Smith will be taking photos to commemorate the occasion. Please look for the enclosed flyer with more details. In the past year, Lutie Elementary students have enjoyed skate nights but without a great deal of consistency on how the event was run. This year, we hope to change that. Each skate activity will be held with the following layout: Grades 1-3 from 3:15 – 4:15, Grades 4 – 6 from 4:15 – 5:15. Admission is $3.00 for those renting skates, $2.00 for those with skates. Concessions will be provided each night. The first skate party will be hosted by the Elementary STUCO and National Elementary Honor Society on the afternoon of September 12th. Please feel free to come and enjoy the afternoon with your child. Please note: Students can not be dropped off before 7:30; we do not have anyone on duty to supervise students before that time. When students need to use alternate routes or modes of transportation going home, please send a note with the student. If this is not possible, due to an emergency or unforeseeable circumstance, please call the office by 2:30 to ensure your child gets the message. We appreciate your help with this matter. Again, if you have any comments, suggestions, or concerns, please let me know. I appreciate your calls and visits. It’s always nice to hear how we can best meet our student’s needs.
Educationally yours, Nancy Wray
